Beautiful family heirlooms, glittering items at an estate
sale, or the fashionable accessories of a 1920s flapper…
welcome to the wonderful world of vintage jewelry!
Vintage Jewelry is a broad term used to describe different
types of antique jewelry by different jewelers. There are
several categories that usually come up when discussing vintage
jewelry, and they are: Victorian, Edwardian filigree, Art
Deco, Art Nouveau, Art Moderne, Retro, 1950's, Replica &
Reproduction jewelry, vintage costume, collectible costume,
vintage watches, men's accessories & vintage vanities.
But generally, the 1920s to 1970s era is what we consider
vintage jewelry to date from.
Most of vintage jewelry can also be called costume jewelry.
This term is almost universally defined as jewelry that is
not made from precious stones. There exists great debate regarding
the origins of the term, as well as the first producers of
costume jewelry. Some have labeled Coco Chanel as being the
first designer to bring costume jewelry to the forefront.
Others believe that costume jewelry as we recognize it today
was being produced in the late nineteenth century.
What our grandmothers wore as inexpensive alternatives to
fine jewelry, today has become one of the most collectible
of collectibles. From the simple to the outrageous there exists
hundreds of genres to admire and wear!
