The name mother of pearl has been mentioned as early as the
1500s. Today, the main sources of mother of pearl are the
pearl oyster (found in Asian warm and tropical seas), freshwater
pearl mussels (found in the rivers of Europe, Asia, and the
United States), and the abalone of California and other Pacific
regions.
Just like the pearl, the mother of pearl is a secretion of
the mantle in some fresh-water and some salt-water mollusks.
But the mother of pearl is actually the hard, smooth, iridescent
substance that forms the lining of these pearl-producing shells.
When this lining is especially thick, people use it to create
jewelry and decorations.
The luxurious glow of this beautiful substance, composed
of calcium carbonate, can be incorporated into any type of
jewelry, and worn on any occasion. From casual to dress, there
is always room for mother of pearl in a wardrobe.
Usually designers add mother of pearl to silver-based jewelry,
because the two colors compliment each other with their moonlight
tones. You can find pink and darker shades of mother of pearl,
along with the traditional creamy color.
It’s elegance and softness reflected in the lining
of a shell! Mother of pearl jewelry makes a beautiful gift
for Mother’s Day, a birthday, anniversary, or Easter.
