Although
turquoise has appeared in the fashions and cultures of the
world for centuries, nobody knows exactly when it came to
our attention. Turquoise was not specifically mentioned in
the Bible, but scholars believe that the robe worn by the
high priest Aaron was decorated with turquoise. Aristotle,
Pliny, and other philosophers refer to stones that must have
been turquoise. After the 4th or 5th century A.D., many writings
that appeared discussed the stone.
Explorers such as Marco Polo took time to write about it.
Certainly, the prehistoric peoples of the Western hemisphere
knew about turquoise; pieces have been found in burial and
archeological sites throughout the two continents.
The Anasazi and Hohokam mined turquoise throughout our Southwest.
Archaeologists have found definite evidence that these prehistoric
people mined turquoise at Cerillos and the Burro Mountains
of New Mexico, Kingman and Morenci in Arizona, and the Conejos
areas of Colorado.
It seems clear that turquoise has been considered a stone
of life and good fortune for thousands of years. It was believed
to have healing properties, and regarded as a holy stone,
a good-luck-charm or a talisman. Persian philosopher Al Kazwini
wrote: "The hand wearing a Turquoise and using it as
a sealing stone, will never be poor.” Turquoise stones
were loved as ornaments decorating turbans, often set in a
border of pearls, in order to protect the wearer from the
"evil eye”.
Thus, throughout the history of turquoise stones and jewelry,
it was always worn as protection to ward off the influence
of dark and evil powers. Formerly it was thought to protect
riders and horses from accidental falls, and are nowadays
considered the ideal good-luck stones for aviators, flight
staff and other risky professions.
In the contemporary teachings of the Healing Power of Stones,
wearing turquoise is recommended to solve the problems caused
by a depressive outlooks. The cheerful color is supposed to
lend self-confidence to quieter personalities. Turquoise is
also very popular as a token of friendship, since it’s
reputed to be responsible for faithfulness and reliable relationships.
