When you’re buying an engagement ring there are a lot
of questions and equally as many people willing and waiting
to give you advice. Today there isn’t one correct way
to give an engagement ring. Women are buying their own ring
or going with their future betrothed to pick the ring out.
Some hopelessly romantic men are still finding sly ways to
find out just what kind of a ring their Sweetheart desires
and then surprising her with a jaw- dropping proposal. However
you decide to get engaged a ring is always a part of the event.
Following are some tips to get you started on the right path
and make buying an engagement ring a good experience for all
involoved.
Find the right jeweler, in your area –
The best way to find a jeweler may be to ask around. Don’t
limit yourself to family and close friends. Talk to the guys
at the gym, at your local market or at work. Some people have
terrible ring buying experience and it’s best to have
as much information about a potential jeweler as possible
before plunking down what may be a large part of your annual
income on an engagement ring.
Research rings even before you go into a jewelry store. The
more you know the less likely you are to have the wool pulled
over your eyes by an overzealous salesman.
Don't forget about Internet jewelers –
Internet jewelers make ring shopping a lot easier! The key
here is to ask around. See if anyone you know has experience
dealing with an Internet jeweler. Make sure you know what
the return policies are and get a written confirmation about
any information the jeweler gives you concerning your ring.
Ask questions – When your ring shopping
there is a ton of information out there! When you go to a
store don’t be intimidated. The best way is to be prepared
and then if a question comes up don’t be afraid to ask.
Jewelers and jewelry sales staff are trained to answer consumer
questions, it’s part of their job!
Learn the price of diamonds - Once you've
narrowed down your selection and you've selected a jeweler,
the last remaining task is to negotiate the best possible
price. Just like you wouldn't purchase an automobile without
knowing its factory-invoice cost (from such sources as Consumer
Reports* or BlueBook*), you should not purchase a diamond
based solely on the jeweler's stated price. Shop around. Online
you can find sites that list what a ring should go for. Don’t
ever be afraid to negotiate. You might as well as, the worst
they can say is no, but talking to a manager is usually your
best bet for getting a good price.
Buy it – Make sure you get everything
in writing; this will protect you in case you find something
that was promised not there, either by way of guarantee or
quality of the ring.
