The tradition of ascribing certain gemstones to certain months
of the year has developed over thousands of years. Some believe
that the idea of birthstones originated in pagan cultures,
and passed down to Judaic and Christian traditions. But most
gem scholars agree that the tradition of birthstones arose
from the Breatsplate of Aaron: a ceremonial religious garment
set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes
of Israel and also corresponded with the twelve signs of the
zodiac and the twelve months of the year. During the eighteenth
century, the concept of birthstones regained in popularity
and several lists were generated. Britain’s National
Association of Goldsmiths (N.A.G.) developed a uniform “official”
list in 1937, and now the list is internationally recognized.
You can find any type of jewelry displaying birthstones.
Rings, necklaces, bracelets, and even toe rings! They make
